These are the rules this publication holds itself to. They are published so that you
can check whether we have followed them.
Sourcing
- Every article names its sources, and they are institutional: the Health and Safety Executive,
the NHS, NICE, the British Association of Dermatologists, Cancer Research UK, the Met Office, the
World Health Organization, IOSH, and the legislation itself where the subject is occupational duty.
- We do not invent statistics. If we do not have a figure we are confident in, we describe the
effect qualitatively instead of guessing at a number. You will notice an absence of percentages on
this site and that absence is deliberate.
- We do not invent studies, sweat rates, protection percentages, ultraviolet figures or case
studies. If something cannot be written truthfully, we change the piece rather than the truth.
- External links are marked nofollow. They are references, not endorsements.
Clinical boundaries
- We do not diagnose anything, assess anybody's skin, or describe what a mark, mole or lesion
means.
- We do not give treatment advice, including for sunburn, heat illness or eye injury.
- Where a question crosses into clinical territory we stop and point at the NHS, a GP, a
pharmacist, an optometrist, NHS 111, or 999 where it is genuinely urgent.
- We link to the British Association of Dermatologists and Cancer Research UK for guidance on what
to look out for, because those organisations are qualified to write it and we are not.
Commercial boundaries
- We name no brands and recommend no products anywhere on this site.
- We carry no affiliate links, no display advertising and no advertising network of any kind.
- We do not sell links, do not accept paid guest posts, and do not publish sponsored articles.
- Our only revenue is the paid register and a labelled newsletter sponsor line, both at published
rates, and neither can influence anything we write. The rates are on the
rate card.
- Every article carries a disclosure block stating its commercial position.
What we refuse to publish, at any price
- A ranking of products, coaches, clubs, employers or providers. We have assessed nobody and a
ranking would imply that we had.
- A directory listing that claims or implies an endorsement.
- Any claim about a specific product's performance during exercise.
- Anything that could be read as clinical advice.
- Content written or paid for by a commercial party and presented as editorial.
- Coverage of the laboratory test methodology behind water resistance claims, which is outside our
remit by design.
Language
British English. Plain sentences. We avoid frightening people and we avoid moralising about
anybody's training or work. Where the answer is that nothing works and the exposure has to be
accepted, we say that instead of inventing a solution.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, tell us through the contact page. We correct the
page and note that it has been corrected. We do not quietly edit and pretend otherwise.
