Helmets, caps and the scalp

A parting is a strip of skin facing straight up at the sun, and nothing you apply to it survives a session. Headwear is not a comfort decision.

The short answer

The top of the head faces almost straight up, which makes it the highest-angle surface on the body, and it is also where sweat production is heaviest and where hands go most often. Nothing applied to a scalp survives a session, so headwear is the only realistic control, and it also handles the forehead, the ears and the sweat that would otherwise reach the eyes.

Run the angle column of an exposure map for any sport and the same row comes out on top every time. The crown of the head is a horizontal surface pointing at the sky, held there for the entire session, with no natural shading of any kind. If you have hair, a parting is a strip of that surface with nothing over it at all. If you have short or thinning hair, the whole thing is exposed.

It is also the worst possible surface for applied protection. Sweat production on the scalp is heavy, hair prevents a film from sitting evenly, hands go there constantly to push hair back or wipe a brow, and hats come on and off. Anything applied is gone quickly and cannot be reapplied without dealing with hair. This is one of the very few surfaces on the body where the answer is simply not product.

Peak or brim

The choice between a peaked cap and a brimmed hat is not a style question, it is a coverage question, and the two cover different surfaces.

The vent problem

Cycling helmets, climbing helmets and some work helmets are vented, for good reasons. Vents are openings, and light comes through them onto the scalp in a pattern that matches the shell. Riders with short hair sometimes notice this after a long summer ride as a striped burn along the crown, which is a very precise map of their own helmet.

The traditional answer in cycling is a thin cap worn under the helmet, and it is a good one: it covers the crown, it covers the ear tops, its short peak shades the forehead and eyes, and it absorbs sweat at the hairline. Where a helmet is required for safety, the helmet takes priority and the cap goes underneath rather than instead.

The band line

Any hat with a band creates a friction line across the forehead where the band sits. That line is under cover while the hat is on, which is fine, and completely exposed the moment the hat comes off, which is the problem. People who take a hat off on a climb and put it back on at the top have created a stripe of skin that was rubbed clean by the band and then exposed.

The fix is a habit rather than an item: the hat either stays on or the plan accounts for it coming off. On a long day, the most common single failure is a hat in a pocket during the sunniest hour of the day.

Not immersion

Swim caps and water headwear get discussed as protective items, and they do cover a scalp, but the problem they solve is different.

In land sport the head is the site of the heaviest sweat production and the most frequent hand contact, and it is exposed for the entire session with no natural break. The relevant properties of headwear are that it stays on while you work hard, absorbs sweat at the hairline, and covers the ears. None of those is a water property.

Hair, and what it does

Hair provides genuine cover to the scalp underneath it, and thick hair provides quite a lot. What it does not cover is a parting, which is a strip facing straight up, and it does not cover the hairline, the temples or the ears. Short hair, closely cropped hair and thinning hair leave progressively more of the crown directly exposed.

This is worth stating without any drama attached to it. It simply means that the case for a hat is stronger for some people than others, and that anybody who has recently cut their hair short has changed their own exposure map without necessarily noticing.

The scalp and where to take a concern

The scalp is a site people rarely examine, partly because it is hard to see. Any new or changing mark on the scalp, or anywhere else, is a question for a GP. Cancer Research UK and the British Association of Dermatologists publish plain guidance on what to look out for. We do not assess skin here.

Choosing a hat you will actually wear

  1. It has to stay on while you work hard. A hat that blows off or bounces will end up in a pocket.
  2. It has to be cool enough to keep on in July. Light, open construction and a light colour help.
  3. It should absorb sweat at the hairline, because that is the fix for the stinging eyes problem.
  4. It should reach the ears if you are not going to protect them any other way.
  5. It should be washable, because a sweat-saturated band is a delivery system rather than a barrier.
  6. For long days with no shade, a rear flap or a brim is worth more than any other feature.

In every sport covered on this site, headwear is either the first or the second most valuable item in the plan. It is also the cheapest, the easiest to remember and the one people abandon first when it gets hot, which is precisely when it matters most.

Questions

Can I put sunscreen on my scalp?

You can, but it does not survive a session: sweat production there is heavy, hair prevents an even film, hands go there constantly and it cannot practically be reapplied. For the crown and parting, headwear is the realistic control rather than anything applied.

Do cycling helmet vents let sun through?

Yes, in a pattern matching the shell, which is why riders with short hair sometimes see striped burning along the crown after long summer rides. A thin cap under the helmet covers the crown and the ear tops and is the traditional fix.

Is a visor as good as a cap?

No, because a visor leaves the crown and the parting exposed, and those are the highest-angle surfaces on the body. If a visor is preferred for vision or comfort, the crown has to be dealt with some other way.

What about the ears?

Very few hats cover them. A wide brim does, a cap with genuine ear coverage does, and a peaked cap does not. The ears are among the most consistently missed surfaces in every sport, which is why they have their own article on this site.

Does hair count as protection?
