The stinging eyes problem

The single most common reason people stop using sun protection on the face during exercise, and the one problem with a genuinely mechanical solution.

The short answer

Stinging is a transport problem, not a formulation problem. Sweat produced on the scalp and forehead runs downhill, picks up whatever is on the skin, and delivers it into the eye at the inner corner and along the brow. The fix that reliably works is mechanical: intercept the sweat above the eye with a band, a peak or a brow, and keep product off the strip of skin directly above the eyebrow that drains into the eye.

Ask people who train outdoors why they stopped putting anything on their face, and a large share of them give the same answer. It ran into their eyes, it stung for twenty minutes, they could not see properly, and they have not bothered since. It is worth taking seriously, because the consequence is not a minor irritation. It is an entire population of runners, cyclists and outdoor workers who have quietly stopped protecting the part of the body with the highest and most consistent exposure of all.

The useful reframing is this: the eye is downhill of the forehead, and the forehead is one of the most prolific sweat surfaces on the body. Anything sitting on that forehead is being loaded onto a moving stream of salty fluid that is heading for your eye by gravity. The question is not why it stings. The question is why anyone expected it not to.

The route sweat takes

Sweat produced on the scalp emerges at the hairline and follows the path of least resistance down the forehead. It is joined by sweat produced on the forehead itself. The eyebrow is a partial dam and diverts a proportion sideways, which is one of its functions, but a brow is not a gutter and it overflows. The overflow goes to two places: the inner corner of the eye beside the nose, and the outer corner at the temple. Wind, head position and running gait all change the balance between the two.

On a bicycle the geometry is worse. The head is tilted forward, so the forehead is closer to horizontal and sweat pools rather than drains, then releases in a slug when you lift your head or brake. Glasses catch some of it and channel the rest along the frame. On a climb, when output and therefore sweat rate are highest and airflow is lowest, all of this happens at once.

Why the sting happens

Two things arrive at the eye together. The first is sweat itself, which is salty and mildly irritating on its own, as anybody who has had a drop go in during a hard effort knows. The second is whatever the sweat has picked up on the way. Sun protection is designed to sit on skin and stay there, which is exactly the property that makes it unpleasant when it lands on a mucous membrane instead.

Formulations differ in how much they contribute, and people differ in how much they react. Some find products that leave a drier, more matte film cause them less trouble. Some find mineral filters behave differently on them than organic ones. Those are individual observations and worth acting on individually, but the plain fact is that no product is designed to be comfortable in an eye, and any plan built on finding one that is will eventually fail on a hot day.

Not immersion

Swimmers get product in their eyes too, but the cause is different and so is the fix. In the water the product is floated off the whole face at once and pushed into the eye by immersion or by goggles seating over it, which is why the swimming answer is about what you apply and how long before you get in.

In land sport the delivery mechanism is a continuous downhill flow from the scalp. Nothing about the timing of application changes that flow. The only reliable interventions are the ones that interrupt the route.

The interventions that actually work

Intercept above the eye

A towelling or technical brow band worn at the hairline is the single most effective measure, because it catches sweat at the top of the run rather than trying to deal with it at the bottom. It has to be absorbent and it has to be changed or wrung out on a long day, because a saturated band is a delivery system rather than a barrier. A cap with a sweatband performs the same job and adds cover to the scalp, which is the highest exposure surface on the whole body.

Leave a drainage strip

Do not apply anything to the strip of forehead immediately above the eyebrow, roughly a fingerbreadth deep. That band is the last stretch of the drainage route and contributes the most to what reaches the eye. If it is covered by a cap peak or a band, as it should be, it does not need product anyway. This is the single change that most people notice immediately.

Apply well before you start

Product applied and allowed to settle on dry skin behaves differently from product applied two minutes before a warm-up. Applying at home, before dressing, and letting it dry properly gives it time to set on the skin rather than being immediately mobilised by the first sweat of the session. It also removes the temptation to apply with hands that then go straight onto handlebars, a racquet grip or a tool handle.

Fix the wipe

Most people wipe a brow with the back of a glove, a sleeve or a bare forearm. Each wipe moves product from the forehead across the eyebrow and into the eye, and also removes protection from the forearm that did the wiping. A wristband or a dedicated cloth used deliberately, wiping outwards and upwards rather than downwards across the brow, does far less damage.

What about the eyes themselves

Separate from stinging, the eyes have their own exposure problem, and it is not solved by anything you put on skin. Ultraviolet reaches the eye directly and by reflection, and the reflection component is very large on snow, on water and on pale rock or concrete. Eyewear with genuine ultraviolet filtration, in a wrap that limits what arrives from the side, is the control there. That is a large enough subject to have its own piece.

If it has already stung

Rinsing with clean water is the usual first response and normally settles it. If vision is affected, if pain persists, or if the eye stays red and sore afterwards, that is a matter for a pharmacist, an optometrist or a GP rather than something to train through. We do not give clinical advice here.

The wider point

The stinging eyes problem is the clearest example of the theme running through this whole site. It is not a question about which product to buy. It is a question about a route, a flow rate and a piece of kit, and it is solved with a headband and a habit rather than with a purchase. Once you see the face as a drainage system with a predictable downhill route, the fix designs itself, and the most exposed surface on your body stops being the one you have given up on.

Questions

Which type of sun protection stings least during exercise?

People differ, and we do not recommend products, so the useful answer is about behaviour rather than category: drier, more matte films tend to travel less than very emollient ones, and anything applied to dry skin well before a session sets better than something applied at the start line. The bigger gain by far is intercepting the sweat with a band or a peak so that less of anything reaches the eye at all.

Should I just leave my face uncovered instead?

No. The face carries the highest and most consistent exposure of any part of the body across a training year, which is exactly why the stinging problem matters. The aim is to make a face plan that survives a session, not to abandon it.

Does a cap peak protect the eyes as well?

A peak cuts direct overhead light reaching the eyes and the upper face, which helps, but it does nothing about ultraviolet arriving from the side or reflected upwards from the ground. On snow, water, sand and pale stone the reflected component is substantial and needs eyewear.

Why does it sting more on the bike than when running?

Head position. On a bike the forehead is closer to horizontal, so sweat pools rather than draining steadily, then releases in a larger slug when the head lifts. Climbing combines the highest sweat rate with the lowest airflow, which is why it usually happens on the way up.

Is a saturated headband worse than none?

It stops absorbing and starts conducting, so on long or hot days it needs wringing out or swapping. A spare band weighs almost nothing and is the cheapest fix on a four hour day.
