Eyes receive ultraviolet directly and by reflection, and no amount of anything applied to skin does anything about it. Eyewear is a separate control with a separate job.

The eyes receive ultraviolet directly from the sky and reflected from the ground, and nothing applied to skin protects them. The control is eyewear with genuine ultraviolet filtration and coverage at the sides, worn for the duration rather than pushed up during effort. It matters most on snow, water, sand and pale hard surfaces, where the reflected component is large.
Everything else on this site is about skin, and skin has a set of controls that work on it: cloth, shade, timing, applied product. The eyes have none of those. A brim helps a little by cutting direct overhead light. Nothing else in the plan touches them. They need their own control, and it is the one most commonly treated as optional.
The reason it gets neglected in sport is practical rather than ignorant. Glasses fog, they slip, they get in the way of ball tracking, they are one more thing to carry, and in some sports they are genuinely awkward. All true, and none of it changes the fact that the eyes are receiving a load nothing else addresses.

The distinction between filtration and tint is the one most worth understanding. A very dark lens without adequate ultraviolet filtration is arguably a worse situation than no lens at all, because the darkness causes the pupil to open while the ultraviolet still arrives. Reputable eyewear sold in the United Kingdom is required to meet applicable standards, and the marking on the product is what tells you what it does.

On snow the eyes are receiving light from the sky and a strong reflected component from the most reflective common surface there is. Prolonged exposure in that environment can cause photokeratitis, sometimes called snow blindness, which is painful and is the reason eye protection is treated as mandatory rather than optional by everyone who spends time on snow professionally.

What it will say is that on snow the eyewear stays on, side coverage matters, and pushing goggles up onto a helmet during a climb is the moment people get caught. Anyone with eye pain, grittiness or affected vision after a day on snow should see a pharmacist, an optometrist or a GP, and urgently if vision is affected.
Swimming goggles are eye protection of a sort, and swimmers rightly think about eyes, but the problem is sealing against water rather than filtering a load arriving from the sky and the ground.
In land sport the requirement is filtration plus side coverage across a long open session, with a frame that stays put while you work hard and does not fog. Those are different design problems, which is why one does not substitute for the other.
Ball sports are the hard case. Tracking a high ball through a lens, in changing light, with a frame edge in your field of view, is a real disadvantage and players are not wrong to resist it. Cricket, tennis and football all present this.
There is no clean answer, and pretending otherwise would be useless. What is worth saying is that most players who dismiss it have never tried in a practice session, that lens technology for exactly this problem exists, and that officials, coaches and anybody standing at the side have none of the tracking problem and all of the exposure. The people at a cricket match who most need eyewear are the umpires and the spectators, not the batter.

The requirement is genuine filtration plus coverage, and on snow both matter a great deal because reflection is at its highest. Whether that is met by a wrap-around frame or by goggles depends on conditions, but open-sided glasses are not doing the job.
It is a real disadvantage and worth acknowledging. Most players who dismiss it have not tried in practice, and lens options designed for the problem exist. Officials, coaches and anybody at the side of the field have all of the exposure and none of the tracking difficulty.
If you wear prescription glasses anyway, ultraviolet filtration is a normal part of a lens specification and worth discussing, particularly if you spend long periods outdoors. That is a conversation for an optometrist rather than for this site.
