A walking or cycling commute is short but repeats twice a day, on the same route, at the same hours, in the same kit, for years. The repetition rather than the duration is what makes it significant, and because every variable is identical every day, a single kit decision made once applies to hundreds of trips.
Nobody thinks of the ride to work as a sun exposure. It is twenty five minutes, it is transport, you do it in ordinary clothes half the time, and it does not appear in any training log. And yet: twice a day, five days a week, for most of the year, for as long as you have that job.
The arithmetic is what makes the point. Multiply almost any short duration by four hundred or five hundred repetitions and it stops being trivial. This is the same argument as the training block problem, applied to something even more invisible, because at least a training session gets recorded somewhere.

A commute has a property no training session has: you travel one way in the morning and the opposite way in the evening, on the same road, at times when the sun is relatively low. That means one side of your face and body is presented to the sun on the way in and the other side on the way home, or, on a route running the wrong way relative to the sun, the same side both times.
People who ride the same route for years often notice this as an asymmetry: one forearm, one cheek or one side of the neck consistently more exposed than the other. It is a small effect per trip and a substantial one over years, and it is worth knowing which side of you is taking it.

Everything about a commute is identical every day: the route, the time, the kit, the bike, the bag. That uniformity is precisely what makes the exposure accumulate, and it is also what makes it trivially easy to fix, because a single decision propagates to every trip without any further thought.
Nobody applies swimming logic to a commute, which is a relief, but they do apply the beach logic that says protection is for holidays and heatwaves.
A commute is neither. It is a short, unremarkable, endlessly repeated exposure at fixed hours, and the only thing that works against it is a default built into how you leave the house.
Walking commutes and school runs have the same shape and are even less likely to be counted. Twice a day, on foot, often with children, at hours set by a school timetable, for years. The same one-off decisions apply: a hat kept by the door, and the habit of applying something to faces and the backs of hands in summer as part of getting out of the house.
For children this matters more, and the practical reality is that it is entirely the adult's decision. A hat that lives by the door is a plan. A hat that has to be found each morning is not.
The ultraviolet load in a British winter is low, and this article is not going to pretend otherwise. But a bright winter morning with a very low sun does two things worth noting: it puts the sun directly in your eyes rather than above you, which is a glare and safety issue as much as anything, and where snow is lying it adds a reflected component from below at exactly the angle that reaches your face.
Eyewear is the relevant control there, and most commuters want it anyway for grit, wind and low sun. It is one of the few pieces of kit on this site that earns its place all year round.

The commute is the purest example of the pattern this whole site keeps returning to. The exposure that matters is rarely the exposure that feels significant. It is the ordinary, repeated, unremarkable exposure that nobody records and nobody plans for, and the only thing that works against it is a default rather than a decision.
One trip is trivial. Two trips a day, most weekdays, for most of the year, for as long as you hold the job, is not, because the same surfaces receive the same exposure hundreds of times. The point is repetition rather than duration.
Because a commute runs in one direction in the morning and the opposite direction in the evening on the same road, at hours when the sun is relatively low. Depending on how your route runs relative to the sun, one side can take considerably more than the other over years.
Keeping the kit with the bike so no decision is needed: a thin cap with the helmet, gloves in the pannier, eyewear on the bars. Anything requiring a daily choice will be skipped on the mornings you are late, which is most of them.
It has exactly the same shape: twice a day, fixed hours, same route, for years, and for children rather than adults. The practical answer is a hat kept by the door rather than one that has to be found, and applying something as part of getting out of the house in summer.
The ultraviolet load is low, so the skin case is weak. The eyewear case is strong all year, because a low winter sun is directly in your eyes and lying snow reflects from below at the same angle. Most commuters want eyewear for grit and wind anyway.
